My photograph comes from a movie poster that named “Bride and Prejudice” (It is adaptation of English writer Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice”.Denotation: There are a young man and woman on this movie poster. In background, on the left, there are lots of people and huge buildings. People come from different races: black, Asian, white. On the right, there are people who come from Asian race wear native costumes and their native elements (make-up, buildings). There are many birds and they are flying. The sky is blue.Connatation: There is a handsome, young, modern white knight with his nice clothes. He looks young urban Anglo-saxon Americans who come from upper class. He is sure from himself. He looks happy and successful. There is also a beatiful girl behind him, she is not fat, not ugly, not old. She has ideal sizes with perfect face: big eyes, small-nice noise, dolgun lips, çıkık elmacık yanak kemikleri that accepted wonderful by culture industry. The movie poster shows us multi-cultural construction of the USA: Afro-American, Asian, yellow race (sarı ırk, Chinese and Japanesse etc.) Skyscrapers associate achievement of Western civilizations. It says to us as if all the people who live in the West are happy with their smiling faces. They look also healty, there is no crime, even though the USA is the first in the crime rate in the world. We can’t see also unhappiness, obesite, middle aged people, class difference, homeless people and so on. This is the ideal world. It is not realistic, it drawns us perfect world. On the other hand, on the right, poster shows us India and Indians with their native costumes. There is not seen any development in there (skyscrapers), they don’t loose their customes. Their dresses and women’s make up. (However, when a person comes from other country to the America she/he adaptes himself/herself this place to become American as soon as possible like left side of this poster.)They don’t look wealty, they don’t have perfect body, colour, face etc. When we compare Western measurement/dimensions. (White skin, blonde hair, 90-60-90 sizes, tallness) Their daughter is appropriate who is star in this film, she is depicted undeveloped country’s attractive girl.Overall ideology: There are cultural and racial differences betweeen our stars in this movie that culture industry likes to use that kind of conradictions betweeen the movie couples. Others are: rich-poor, social status differences high class-low class etc.The poster says us, stars in a movie must be so attractive, handsome, beatiful. Especially, ugly, fat girls have no right to fall in love with our white knight or a girl like this must accept these ideal criterias and must change herself to be a part of this system in order to be married prince. However, men have no any restrictions, women must always accept them in every situation and their every treatments and character features.Furthermore, this film poster shows Western view to the East. That is, Orientalist view. West is always depicted white, wealty, successful, and handsome male. Yet, East is depicted gorgeous, sexually attractive woman who serves to the West as if she is a slave. If a white hero wants the girl, she would be always ready to accept his offer: marriage. Easterner woman doesn’t have a sexual relationship without marriage that shown by culture industry. East always wants to be West,. Easterner girl wishes to be a Western woman. However, only the women can change their social status/class, not a man does this! White hero takes the girl who look like a supermodel because hero deserves a supermodel. After that he makes her a part of his high class . Intelligence, well education and other qualifications are not important, only the physical appearance is important in this world. In movie is said “Lalita looks to Darcy like a small-town Indian beauty who knows nothing of the world.”End of the film audiences live a catharsis when heroin takes the prince. Culture industry always makes this: to give peole hope “maybe one day you take whatever you want” in order to protect status quo. Every subject, differences, emotions can sell and buy in this market to make profit. Its target audiences are both women and men but especially women because women are more romantic than men.Japanesses are kneaded transformed in Western culture on this movie poster.Their standing back to back symbolizes cultural and and racial difference (in novel Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy came from same race and culture) but love after that make everything easy according to culture industry. But in daily life love is not enough to overcome these kind of problems. It can be only happened in fairy tales and movies. All these make people take away real needs. Frankfurt School.Culture industry and media produce false needs to protect status qou with giving to hope to the masses as I say above.
