Satellite picture of TsunamiMost of you, by now would have heard about the Tsunami which hit South Asia very badly the last week. It’s a real tragedy, the death count is increasing everyday and already more than 30000 are dead. I was watching the Tsunami hit parts of South India, live on Sunday on the TV and was feeling so bad. All I was able to do was to pray for them.Iam sorry about the wrong picture, I think my friend fooled me by sending me a wrong one. I was unaware that the picture is actually a hurricane which hit Florida. Iam removing the picture from here. tıklayın

I am Diane Rehm. The European Commission recommended formal EU membership negotiations begin with Turkey. Countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Cyprus are expected to provide roadblocks. Turkish daily news predicts a thorny road ahead. We will talk about the debate over this predominantly Muslim country joining Europe, Turkey’s best selling writer Orhan Pmauk. He is the recipient of major Turkish and international awards. His seventh novel titled Snow provides a glimpse of colliding economic, religious, ethnic and cultural forces in Turkey today.…Good morning to you sir, good to have you here. I’d like you please to talk about the European Commission and its recommendation for EU membership with Turkey. What does all it mean to you personally and what does it mean to Turkey as a nation?2:30Orhan Pamuk: I am happy about the decision. I was expecting. This is no surprise. For the last two hundred years, there was a strong westernization movement in Turkey. After the implementation of the European Union, Turkey, although a bit late, knocked the door. It has been told that, the country has been told that you have a horrible record of human rights, that your country is not a full democracy, which was right.9:30Orhan Pamuk: …There had been horrors in the country because of violations of human rights, because of intervention of the army in politics, because of the suppression on the Kurdish guerillas. But the idea of Europe, and that’s what I am telling everywhere, reminds me of the years of Napoleon. That it is so revolutionary in the sense that it changes the culture because 70 million Turks know that if they approach Europe, the country will be richer, there will be more democracy and more important their own State, that is the Turkish State would treat their citizens nicely.18:00Diane Rehm: Siyasi konularda yazmayacağını söylemenize rağmen neden siyasetle ilgilenmeye başladınız ve son romanınız neden siyasi bir roman oldu?O. Pamuk: …As 1990s approach, beginning of the 90s, as I began to be known nationally and internationally, unfortunately this war against Kurdish guerillas began, and the Turkish State and Army acted badly, inflicted a lot of pain to its own people, crippled Turkey’s democracy, and its own culture as well, so I began to do little things outside of my books because the people I sympathize with began to ask me “Would you sign this?” “Would you come to this meeting?”. That’s how, the way to the politics is little by little, and of course they attack you, the columnists who defend the State and the government begin to attack you personally, then you begin to get personally involved. Some of these sentiments went into this book, “Snow”. Anyway, after a while there were the worst years mid 1990s. You could not get critical articles on this issue, criticizing the State, the government and especially the Army. You could not even publish them in Turkey. There were some situations asking me to write in Der Spiegel, in the Guardian and I wrote…Diane Rehm: I’d like you to read from it (Snow) for us, tell us about it.O. Pamuk: Before reading, I have to introduce you to what happens in the beginning. In order to write that novel, I wanted to describe the poorest, miserable forgotten part of Turkey, the town of Kars, which exists. In fact, it is close to Armenian border. I went there. But of course it was almost impossible to go there. If I had thought that I am a Turkish citizen, and this is a free society. That would be naive because the war against the guerillas was going on. If I went there without letting anyone know, the police, the Army would pick me up from the street, do bad things to me, you know beat or torture, and ask me “so what are you doing here?” So I didn’t want that of course. Who wants that? One of the major Turkish newspapers was asking, “Will you contribute to us?” I said, give me a press card, call the mayor there. I honestly told that them what I want to do. I want to go there and survive there for a while, which I did. The beginning of the novel is very autobiographical. The title of the book is Snow. I converted this ninety thousand population, small Turkish town to a sort of micro cosmos of Turkey where there are the political islamists, Kurdish nationalists, Turkish nationalists, liberals, strong presence of the Army, bad memories, feelings of guilt with the presence of old Armenians there. Because the town was also overtaken from the Russians by the Ottamans after the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian war…30:30O. Pamuk: The place of these women thorn between the ultra secular demands of Turkish State and the Army, which are thoroughly anti-democratic and has no respect for the freedom of religion, and the demands of their families and political islamists is one issue.Bir dinleyi: There are number of things that I think Turkey needs to do before they can hope to join the family of civilized nations. One in particular is to become more honest and to admit their past transactions. For example, they still deny the genocide of 1922 against the Armenians and the Greek population. I think they need to make a better treatment of the Kurdish people and even for the Greek Cypriots for what happened after the invasion. I think your honorary guest is a powerful and influential man and he can guide his country towards that end.O. Pamuk: I agree. But on the other hand, I think what should be done is in all these horrific events, which various governments of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire was involved in. There should be full democracy, freedom of right to speak these issues rather than me or anyone imposing this is genocide, you did this, accept this, which is a way of bypassing the sentiments, unfortunately nationalist sentiments of the people. I think essentially what the caller has said is true but the hard task is to make people accept this horrific truth.
